Thanksgiving Eating


The Thanksgiving holiday is 2 weeks out.   The diet experts are starting to rear

their heads, preaching how we must diet through the holiday.  Therefore, these self-proclaimed experts are blabbing about, giving endless, and pretty much useless, tips on how to stay on a diet.

A client me asked what I was going to eat on Thanksgiving.  I told her the same things she should — whatever I like.

I own the word diet. 

A diet is what we eat. 

Generally for me, that means an as close to nature as possible, low carbohydrate, whole food diet. On the occasional day that I don’t follow my usual diet, I consider them open eating days.

In my book, Obesity Undone, I have outlined what internet, low carb guru, Jimmy Moore coined,  ”planned splurges.”  These are days when we predetermine not to be strict. The holidays can, and in my opinion should, be planned splurges.  I wish I could be like fellow Chiropractor Jack LaLanne and eschew unhealthy sugar for all of my life, it is a goal for which I strive, but until then, I am going to indulge from time to time — I accept it, and I don’t let it bring me down.

Partaking, one day, every few months or even weeks, is not going to sabotage all of our hard work; after all, we are the master’s of our meals.  Being the masters, we must be disciplined and plan.  Not for the holiday — but for the day after. Of course this is only for those of us who do NOT have food issues, like celiac or gluten insensitivity or diabetes, etc…

Open faced, delicious.

1- Get rid of leftovers that are not part of our regular diet. I understand that it is wasteful, but if you are a low carber like me, the potatoes, stuffing, pie and the like go in the trash, keep the turkey and vegetables.  If the bad stuff isn’t there, neither is the temptation.  If our family members aren’t watching what they eat and want the leftovers, have them take the food with them.  If they live with you? Tough, they don’t get them either, toss them in the trash!!!

2- Plan the next day’s meals and snacks ahead of time.  After a day of cooking, setting-up, feasting and cleaning, you many not be in the mood to prepare proper foods.  To alleviate this potential problem, have our foods  ready and in the fridge.

3- Weigh ourselves the next day. Don’t get too hung up on the number because it will be up.  Yet, get on the scale.  The increased reading will keep us from making a one day splurge into a multi-week  food fest.

4- Exercise.  I make sure to work out Thanksgiving morning before everyone gets up and then I make sure to exercise first thing Friday morning.  It is important to maintain our exercise routines. No excuses! No carbohydrate loaded laziness! We must get off our asses and move.

Holidays are very food centric events.  The so-called experts will have us believe that we should not partake.  Here is the dirty little secret — we won’t be good.  Part of being human is enjoying food and company. In the U.S., this often goes hand in hand.  So, if we try to listen to the “experts”, but end up overindulging, instead of  simply eating bad one day, we are now over-loaded with both food and bad feelings and next comes the emotional eating that often accompanies guilt.

Remember, when we prepare ahead of time for the splurge and the day after, we will enjoy a guilt free holiday

Keep this one thought in mind:

It is not what we eat between Thanksgiving and Christmas that destroys our weight loss goals and fitness — It is what we eat between Christmas and Thanksgiving that does the damage.

Booze, Hatred, Anger, Complaining, Depressive Negativity and WILK — None Are Good For Health, Wellness and Fitness


I received a phone call from one of my weight loss clients a few months back. She was irate about local talk show host Steve Corbett going on and on about consuming beer and wine and then having the nerve to talk about how healthy he eats and his current fitness level. She also complained vehemently about the weekly beer party, known as the Friday Beer Buzz and its endless promotion. I didn’t hear the Corbett Comedy show, actually I haven’t listened to the show in months, but I have heard him make similar comments in the past.  Just for full disclosure, I happened to receive an email from Steve taking me to task about criticizing his negativity based talk show.  He made some comments which demonstrated that either he didn’t read the entire posting(s) or Steve the writer and the master of single sentence paragraphs, has difficulty  comprehending fully composed paragraphs. As far as the Friday drunk fest, I turn WILK off whenever the morning show veers off in that direction.  Honestly, how silly is to hear adults get excited about boozing and  yell like college kids at a frat party?

But, I digress.

This particular client has encouraged me to write about alcohol consumption in the past.  She has been upset by various programing that glorifies drinking while ignoring the deleterious effects of spirits on the human body.  It is a topic that I always intend to write about, but other topics jump ahead to my attention.  I apologize for the delay.

When it comes to weight loss and/or a fit and healthy life, alcohol has no place.  There I said it!   However, no matter how factual my statement is, I live in the real world and realize that, for whatever reason, people like to consume wine, beer or the harder stuff.  When I make the statement I get the following questions:

-  Do you drink?  Yes, I do, on very rare occasion.  I think in the last year I may have had two mixed drinks, perhaps six or so beers and a few glasses of wine.

-What do you drink when you’re out?  I usually have either unsweetened iced tea or water.  I used to drink diet soda, but I have gotten away from artificial sweeteners.  (More on that topic another posting.)

-What about the studies that claim alcohol has preventative properties?  There is some research that infers that a glass of wine or a beer may be healthful, but in general, the negative effects far outweigh any possible benefit.

When people come to me for help I vigorously discourage any alcohol consumption for the first month or so.  Alcohol is a system wide depressant.  When you are trying to drop weight and get fit, one of your desires is to increase your metabolic rate.  Well, isn’t it counterproductive to do all that work and put in all that effort just to counteract the effect by slowing your system with a drug?  Don’t you want to shed sluggish feelings?  If so, then simply stay away from booze. As far as someone who has survived cancer, alcoholic drinks tax the liver.  Because it is a primary detox organ of the human body beer and wine increase the work of the liver, not only must it work on the alcohol, but it must also give attention to processing, converting and storing the sugars that make up beer and wine.  Additionally, one of the primary sites of metastasis for many cancers is the liver.  So, in striving for a healthful life and caring for a body that has been invaded by cancer and beaten by cancer treatments, common sense would dictate that we protect ourselves by avoiding toxic substances.  Also, let’s not forget, that the liver was subjected to a great deal of stress if chemotherapy was a treatment — so why stress it any more?

Wine and beer are broken down into simple sugars.  On a low carbohydrate eating regime what is the point of avoiding starchy foods if you are simply going to drink them?  The other issue, especially when it comes to wine, is that few people ever has a single serving.  I have heard the outrage. What do you mean?  I only have a glass of wine each night?  To that I answer; an average serving of wine is about four to five ounces, not a balloon goblet filled to the rim.

Your best bet is to avoid alcohol as part of your daily regime.  Liquor is nutrient deficient, clouds the mind, makes one sluggish and will do nothing but hold you back from achieving your full fitness potential.

Another good bet would be to avoid WILK NewsRadio as part of your radio listening habit. I have recently removed the channel from my radio presets, and this more than likely, will be the last time I ever mention the merchants of melancholy ever again.   They, the entertainers, care not for you or your health, and aside from the promotion of unhealthy lifestyle choices, the station is full of anger, bickering, negativity and depressive talk — all of which, may lead to the morose state of hopelessness that those on air project.

How To Diet On Thanksgiving… Don’t!

My Trip From Fat to Fit


If you have lost weight, tried to lose weight or are just thinking about losing weight you have undoubtedly been inundated by advertising.

Be it television, radio, spam, billboards,  hell even folks walking the streets with sandwich boards… you are hit by a plethora of quick fix weight loss promising products..

Drink this in place of a meal and you will lose weight.

Order pre-packaged food and you will lose weight.

Take this “natural” pill and you will lose weight.

I’ve been exposed to them all, I’ve even tried more than a few. Everything from fasting, juicing, fruit only, to  vegetable only diets all promise rapid weight loss without effort.

I am always skeptical of the fast, fat-loss fads that claim to bring forth  miracles that are too good to be true. Why? Because they are too good to be true.Anyone who knows me, has heard me on the radio, podcasts, seen me on television,  has read my book or this blog is aware that I am an avid low carbohydrate follower. They also understand that I am more than just about a diet.  I am a firm believer in the power and benefits of exercise and fitness and weight loss is simply a side effect of fitness. I work out seven days a week.

The most effective way to lose weight and get in shape is following my plan. Okay, I’m a little biased. However, if you follow and apply the 3 D’s and the 3 E’s you have no option but to gain renewed health.Members of the Air Force Academy football team...

Desire to get in shape

Determine that you will do it.

Have the discipline to get it done.

Eat a diet low in carbohydrates, as close to nature and as unprocessed as possible

Exercise seven days a week. Include endurance, cardiovascular training along with progressive resistance workouts.

Posses positive mental energy knowing that you will accomplish your goals and recapture your health.

Be consistent!

Strive for excellence!

Make your health a priority!

You won’t get there with haphazard plans or habits. You must work at it, there are no shortcuts, there is no free pass.

The results will be a fit new you, a healthy individual brimming with confidence and beaming with pride.

Corbett and Tarone — WILK’s Twins of Misinformation


 

In many ways WILK is an egregious bastion of erroneous information. But, when it comes to health, wellness and fitness — this Northeast Pennsylvania talk station rarely, if ever, get’s it right.  The worst of the bunch are Steve Corbett and LA Tarone.  They are diametrically opposed in philosophy and I would venture it a safe bet that the two don’t like one another, but when it comes to their views on health, they are talking twins with views so devoid of accuracy that, the dreaded silence of  dead air would be preferable.

In my little world,  it is no secret that I hold Steve Corbett on par with an anal fissure.  From his mouth, a fountain of misinformation flows forth.  He spews the supposed virtues of his extreme vegetarian views.  He proclaims, with non-expert aplomb, that meat is bad and soy based tofu is good.  He promotes this in the face of many studies that demonstrate that soy’s benefits have been overstated and that in men, soy can have many detrimental effects including; thyroid issues, estrogen like effects and decreased testosterone levels. Even if I believed that a vegetarian diet was in fact healthy; Steve does not present an outward appearance of physical vitality such as high carb, vegan advocate Harley “DurianRider” Johnstone.

However, what is worse is that the self proclaimed promoter of healthful living spends so much of his programing promoting unhealthy eating and drinking choices.  He waxes poetic about drinking wine nightly, for a few pieces of silver he endorses foods that are nothing more than over-processed starch and sugar products and extolls his haphazard exercise regiment. Combined, his attitudes will promote the ever expanding waistlines of Northeast Pennsylvania’s citizens, leading them to the fate of obesity, type II diabetes and a lower quality of life. So I ask, how responsible is it for someone, who so desires a Nanny State of America to protect every citizen’s health and well being, to outwardly glorify the consumption of obesity causing foods and drinks?

L.A. Tarone is a former newspaper writer, current  T.V. host at station WYLN and a weekend and occasional fill in host at WILK Entertainment Radio. I have met L.A. on a few occasions.  He interviewed me when I ran for congress.  I think he is a nice guy and he was an extremely fair interviewer.

After saying all those nice things you must be asking, why is he on the list? Well, he often talks about obesity , Michelle Obama’s efforts concerning childhood obesty, steroids and sports and he is never, ever correct in his facts or conclusions.  One show that stands out, was when he was filling in for Sue Henry and blew his lid ranting about a possible new rule in Pennsylvania.  It seems the Board of Education was considering new rules that would limit parents to a single sweet treat at school parties and allow classrooms one birthday celebration per month.

Look, I don’t like the state getting involved in our day-to-day lives, but children are in schools about seven hours a day. It is the purpose of the schools to educate our children. So, what is the problem with teaching them how to eat properly? What is the problem with maybe instilling in them a little self-control?

Our education system has failed our children terribly when it comes to health and fitness. Gym classes have been reduced or cut, recess is out the window and school lunches are refined carbohydrate laden piles of slop.  Now the board of ed. actually steps up to the plate and attempts something positive and they are going to be dragged over the coals?

Tarone is a nice person, but he is a skinny little guy. He probably still fits into the same sized clothing he wore when he was a young man. Hell from what I have seen, it appears he is still wearing those same clothes.

L.A. Tarone is very knowledgeable on many subjects, but this isn’t one of them. Considering rise in the rate of childhood obesity — something needs to be done. We live in a country where young, preteen children are developing type II, adult onset, diabetes and hypertension.  If we don’t educate them in school, then where do we educate them?
