Boston Strong: Bravado, Defiance, Swag…Bostonians Demonstrate It Is NOT An Act


I wrote what follows, with a few minor changes today, last year, after the horrific bombing at the Boston Marathon.  It was inspired by Steve Corbett’s insulting the memories of those who died, and the struggles of those who survived:

Bravado, defiance, swag,  call it whatever you would like, but positive, strong attitudes can help get us through the worst of times.

Small market radio talk show entertainer, Steve Corbett, intimated  with smug disdain, that those in Boston were putting forward a false front of toughness — trying to show they weren’t hurt by what happened at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.  He used the analogy of the boxer who takes a hard hit, but smiles and claims he or she isn’t injured –  and how he, Steve Corbett, didn’t like it.

Steve Corbett is small market, radio entertainer and his whole shtick is based upon pseudo-machismo. From yelling at callers, to demeaning nicknames for candidates and politicians, to banning Facebook posters, to not allowing comments on his blog postings,  to his snarling picture with his fists up in a boxing stance, all the way to his scowling catch phrase “you better listen” — Steve Corbett is the embodiment of an insecure man putting on an over-the-top tough guy act, all the while hoping no one will call him out on it.

The difference between his act,  and those in Boston, is that Bostonians are not acting —  they are tough and more importantly, they are strong.  Boston is a metropolitan area made up of a folks from a working class background, and while they may be smiling and shaking their heads, none are claiming they are not hurt.  They, better than those who have been observing, know they have been both physically and emotionally damaged.  What they are demonstrating to the world is that they are wobbled, but not knocked down —  that they took a potentially debilitating hit, but they aren’t going to let it collapse them — that they will not allow an act of terrorism to cause them tremble.

It amazes me that in the face of tragedy, when one, or in this case a region, stands firm, there will be someone who wants to turn their strength into weakness.  That there will be a person, or people, who desire to derail their positive energy with negative commentary.  That there are those who actually yearn for them to stay beaten down, stay afraid, to cower and beg for help because the Steve Corbetts of the world can’t understand true strength, factual fortitude and genuine resolve.

I pray for those affected by this tragedy, and I also admire those who continue to move forward, who won’t go down, who won’t allow terrorism to make them cower in fear, and who would laugh at the hyperbole of people who do nothing  more than talk, but never take action.

After watching the specials leading up to the 2014 Boston Marathon, I understand now, more than I did when I originally wrote this, that those who are genuinely victimized, yet chose not to be victims, both earn and deserve our respect.

I respect those who are Boston Strong!

Should Exercise Be Fun?

CAM00364I was reading on one of the many Facebook pages I belong to and someone was asking about not feeling up to a workout.  Some of the responses suggested that workouts must be fun.  As I read them I had to ask myself two questions:

Are my workouts fun? Do they need to be?

My exercise routine is spit into two portions:

Strength training, in which I use weight lifting.

Endurance training, in which I use a combination of jogging, sprints, rope skipping and or the stationary bike.

Yes, I will admit that there is something exhilarating about pitting myself against cold, unyielding iron.  And, yes I do look forward to my mornings in the gym.  If I am pressed for time, I always get in some sort of weight training. While I do relish weightlifting, I’m not sure if the word fun would be an apt descriptor.

When it comes to jogging; I like the the time alone, free from distractions, outside enjoying the weather, but do I have fun? Not really. I am not even sure I even slightly enjoy the activity.  I am not really built for running, either physically or mentally, but because of the results I attain,  I get out there and I do it.

I do NOT believe that fun needs to be part of the criteria for going out and exercising, or even in  the choice of a particular exercise.  I pick and chose my routine for the results I am looking to achieve.  When I am bulking up and adding strength, my weight training is slower and the weights I use are much heavier.  I still jog, but I cover less distance and I do it at a much slower pace.  When I am leaning out, I decrease the poundage and I move at a much quicker pace.  I cover more distance when I jog, I do it at a faster pace and I include rope skipping and sprints.

No matter what my particular goal is, I always include both progressive resistance and endurance training.  They both contribute to the overall result I am striving to achieve.

Is fun important?  I guess it could be, but it isn’t a requirement.  Exercise is done to improve the overall quality of life.  While I don’t really consider my exercise routine fun, it makes much of the other activities that I engage in much more fun.

When I was pursuing my Chiropractic education, I spent hours upon hours studying for classes, quizzes, exams and boards.  Did I have fun during all that study time? I would have to say no, but it was necessary to achieve my goal.  I look at exercise much the same way.  My goal in regards to exercise is not to have fun during my exercise time; it is to achieve an improved level of fitness.

The fun is in the results —

-because I am fit, I am able to hike longer and more difficult trails.vaca 2014 lovin the beach

-because I am fit, I am able to participate more actively in beach and ocean activities

-because I am fit, I am able to live every aspect of my life much fuller and with much greater joy.

So, is fun a requirement when it comes to choosing an exercise routine? Perhaps to some, but it wasn’t to Jack LaLanne and it isn’t to me.  I am much more concerned with results. 

Taking into account travel to the track, then to the gym, showering and dressing — only about ninety minutes of my day is focused on exercise. While fun is nice; I prefer effectiveness, which in turn  improves the quality of  the remaining twenty-two and a half  hours (and, yes, I sleep better because of exercise) of my day.

The Great Paradox: To Live A Better Life; Embrace The Certainty Of Your Death


I wrote and posted this in Jan. 2012, before the stress of that upcoming summer changed my life, and my bad choices led to a obesity relapse.  I now read this posting every day.  I must never forget and allow my choices to ever again give the bastard obesity a foothold in my life.

Dead Like Me: Life After Death

There are events in our lives that make us aware of our own mortality.  I have had three definitive instances in my lifetime that have done this.  Unfortunately, that was all those particular instances did — made me aware.

Most of us know that one day we are going to die.  As we have grown into adulthood we have lost loved ones and we reflect on their life and we take a moment, especially if someone dies suddenly or unexpectedly,  to realize that one day that will be us.  Sometimes we reflect for more than a moment, other times even less.  However long we reflect or pause, we move on and forward, but inside we may not genuinely believe that one day that will be us.

Our mortality is one of those intangibles in life because it is so hard to grasp.  We learn by experience, and while a brush with death, battling a life threatening illness or a near death experience may remind us that we are merely mortal, we may not actually accept the fact.

You see that is, in my opinion, the difference that really matters.  We can be aware that we will one day die, but we may not really in our hearts accept it.  For most of us we look at our deaths as something that may happen and if we concede the certainty, we cling to the belief that it is a day that is a long way off.

After my cardiac catheterization I went from being aware of, to accepting of my ultimate demise.  It was a moment that freed me of many of my worries and concerns.  To not only know, but genuinely, whole-heartedly accepted the one truth about life, my person was suddenly set free.

I have written about the detriments of negative energy in the past.  It was a concept that I was always well aware of, but until the moment of my mortality acceptance, it was more metaphysical than substantive. When I embraced my mortality, when I accepted that one day I will die — it was then that I fully began to live.

I no longer allow the, often times, real worries of daily living to impact my life.

I no longer allow the uncontrollable actions of others to dampen my joy of living.

I no longer complain, whine and chatter endlessly about the unimportant aspects of every day existence.

I do not love nor even like, the area in which I reside.  I don’t like the attitude of despair and hopelessness. I am not a fan of cold temperatures, icy roads, snow or any other aspect associated with winter in the Northeastern Untied States. However, right now at this moment in time, this is where I am.  I am here because of decisions that I made, so instead of bemoaning the aspects I don’t care for, I focus exclusively on the positives that are present.

Because I not only acknowledge and accept, but dare I say relish my mortality, I embrace the dawn of each and every new morning. When I go out for a jog in the sometimes very frigid morning air, I allow the briskness of the atmosphere to stimulate my senses. When the white precipitations falls from the sky, instead of grumbling about shoveling it, I look forward to the manual work I am physically capable of performing.

It is also about perspective:

  • In the cold temperatures, I have a warm place to sleep.
  • In tough financial times, I have a family to love me and a family for me to love.

I no longer put off enjoying my life.  I recently went to Southern California to visit my sister and nephews.  Money isn’t as free as it has been in the past.  For a very brief moment I thought I should not go.  I juggled some bills, put off others and made the trek west.  The boys will only be young for a brief period of time and I want to be part of it as often as I can.

Because living a fit life is living a better life I have been quoted as saying, “Eat and exercise as if you will live forever; live as if you will die tomorrow.”

I have a goal of changing my residence to a warmer climate, near the ocean and earning enough to unite my family in that one location, yet as I work and plan toward that goal, I accept, that for reasons beyond my control, my life may end before I get there so — I will not allow today to pass in hopes of a tomorrow that may never arrive.

Why Accept Obesity, When We Have The Power Of Self?

In regards to a previous Enemies of the State of Good Health posting, I was sent a message from one of my readers asking me, in reagards to the Fat Acceptance Movement being included,  what is wrong with the acceptance of larger people?

That is a very valid question.

One that deserves a response.

There isn’t any problem.

I don’t like or dislike someone based upon their weight or appearance.  Overweight, large or obese people were not the subject, nor enemies of the state of good health.  The “enemy” was the organization and others like it.

My dislike for the Fat Acceptance Movement has nothing to do with individuals who are struggling with weight issues. My dislike for the movement,  stems from having been morbidly obese at one time and having thought that the world should accommodate my girth because of my lack of self-control and self-discipline.  The Fat Acceptance Movement promotes an almost civil rights tone, pushing for obese people to be treated like a minority.  I simply disagree.  As I have stated many times, in the absence of an underlying condition, being overweight or obese is a choice.  It may not be a conscious choice, but it is a choice.

My former incarnation, Joe.340, thought as what I have read are the beliefs which the Fat Acceptance Movement  promotes.  I was appalled that booths in restaurants were not more spacious.  I genuinely believed that movie theater seats should be roomier.   Also, why couldn’t they have less seats on an airplane and make them all as big as first class? It was my personal belief that others should conform and adapt to me.

Well, that is the problem and that is my main issue.  The Fat Acceptance Movement wants the world to change for them and in turn promote an unhealthy life.  And despite some exceptions, most people who are obese are NOT healthy.

I never suggest to a person that they should lose weight.  I was recently emailed someone’s height and weight and asked whether or not I thought they should lose weight.  I responded to the person that I help those who want to lose weight and recapture their health.   I do not decide for someone if they need to lose weight, even if it the answer is obvious.  It is up to an individual to decide, not only if they need to lose weight, but more importantly, that they want to lose weight.

I live by the mantra that weight loss is a side effect of fitness.  The primary goal of what I do is to get people to embrace fitness, eating low carbohydrate foods found as close to their natural state as possible (a paleolithic model) and good health.  People who have read or heard about me seek me out to lose weight and I help them do that, yet I don’t make the weight loss the only motivation nor the only goal.  The numbers on the scale are a useful feedback tool to reach the most important goal; improvement of their overall health.

Most people who are overweight or obese are not in an optimal state of health and fitness. Yes, I am aware that there are exceptions to the rule, but I am not even sure about those exceptions. Additionally, I am by no means saying that if you are not overweight, you are fit.  There are plenty of folks who do not have a weight problem that are pure physical wrecks.  I am willing to help them as well.  However, I can only relate personal experiences and that is what I try to share.

Back to being overweight, yet fit. Years ago, before I had gotten up to three hundred and forty pounds, I may have fallen,  kind of — sort of,  into that category.  I was in the gym religiously, focusing mostly on strength training and doing very little endurance exercises.  I was stronger than I had been in my entire life.  I weighed about two hundred and eighty pounds, I was carrying around excess fat, but muscular development was obvious.  The joke at the gym where I trained was, I could lift the entire gym… I just couldn’t walk around it.

Was I fit because I was strong?

Was I healthy because my lab work was all good?

Was I fit because my vital signs fell within normal ranges?

You better believe that I was convinced I was fit.  In my delusional mind, I didn’t need to lose weight.  I could not have been more wrong.  That excuse-making, rationalizing mindset was a direct factor in the birth of Joe.340.

I am also not saying we should judge anyone based upon appearance.   What I AM saying is that I do not believe that we should accept our own self-imposed limitations.  We have the power to improve our health and we should not allow a group, no matter how well intentioned,  to dis-empower us.

When I was obese, I could not tie my own shoes.

When I was obese, I could not rise out of a chair without pushing off the arm rests.

When I was obese, I could not get up out of a low couch without rolling over on my stomach, placing my knees on the floor and pushing myself to a standing position.

Were any of the above examples really acceptable?  Unfortunately, for me, they were —- for far too long.

I have been accused of being harsh.

I have been accused of being unyielding.

I have been accused of being unsympathetic.

Well, let me tell you a few things:

I am harsh!  I wish someone was more harsh with me. I don’t want someone to have to be sitting in the emergency room with chest pains, as I was, to realize they need to do something now.

I am unyielding!  I have heard all the excuses, I have used most of them, giving in to the excuses will only make the situation worse.

I am NOT unsympathetic!  Trust me, I was there, I am very sympathetic.  However, I don’t express my sympathy by encouraging lackadaisical behaviors.  I show my sympathy by assisting those who seek my help to reach their goals.

It is my life’s mission, to help those who wish to take control of their poor eating and exercise habits. It is my desire that through fitness, everyone enjoy an improved quality of life.

And, if I am lucky, I will save a life or two along the way.

Getting Older Does NOT Equal Getting Fatter


OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI thought about this posting I wrote back in 2011 as I am now well on my way to regaining my fitness. For those of you who don’t know, I turned 49 in September; in July of this past year I weighed 294lbs, today I weighed in at 240lbs…. I still have 30 more pounds to drop to get back to my comfortable weight of 210lbs, and as I am losing;  it is no more difficult now than it has been in the past — that is to say, it was easy then and it is easy now.  This bullshit about getting older equating to weight gain is perhaps one of the greatest, most exploited, excuses of all time.

Today on the radio I heard a commercial for yet another weight loss without effort product. Accuracy be dammed — the commercial was full of standard pseudo-scientific hokum designed to separate one from their cash which I typically ignore.

However, there was one quote that got my attention.

One quote that preyed upon the fears of many people.
One quote that I know to be patently absurd, but I also know people do believe.
One quote that many use as an excuse for allowing their bodies to degrade and become burden’s on our nation’s health-care system.

What is that quote?

“The older you get the fatter you get.”

My attention was caught.
My concentration was brought to the radio.
My Sicilian blood boiled as anger fueled my seething rage.

This load of garbage was being affirmed as if it were fact.

This myth was being utilized to sell hopeful, distraught persons a magical cure to the current epidemic of obesity.

This old wives tale was being broadcast over, as WILK pitchman  Steve Corbett calls them,  the trusted public airwaves with the intent to exploit a gullible and desperate listening audience.

“The older you get, the fatter you get” is a simply stupid statement. Perhaps a more accurate proclamation might be the lazier you get the fatter you get.

As I have written in the past, unless there is an underlying medical cause, there is no reason, aging or any other, for one to become obese. Obesity is a result of poor eating habits and lack of proper exercise.

My experience has been, the older I am  the fitter I am. The truth is that people who follow my plan don’t believe any of the standard drivel that is being propagated. They are living proof that if you follow the ObesityUndone.com plan getting fatter is not an option.

The problem with most of these weight reduction programs and products is that they are pushing the much desired fable of weight loss without effort. They will use the lazy desire to drop weight without changing eating or exercise habits to enhance their profits.

If we were to believe their hype then we could eat to our heart’s content and have the body of Adonis or Athena. Well, I myself, at one time or another, had tried almost every plan on the market. I am well aware that this is not the case. The only weight I did lose was in my wallet and bank account. The net effect, without embracing a fit lifestyle, was a rebound in weight and a more miserable existence.

Those who follow the ObesityUndone.com understand that well-being is much more than just about the numbers on the scale. It is about overall good health and weight loss is a side effect of fitness.

To develop a good physique, drop ugly disgusting body fat and to enjoy better health takes an investment. It is a combination of the threes.

The three D’s:

Desire

Discipline

Determination

And the three E’s:

Eating

Energy

Exercise

Don’t fall victim to the hype.

Don’t throw away hard-earned money.

Don’t ignore the old adage; “if it is too good to be true, it isn’t.”

I took control of my life, I can help others take control of theirs. I went from a disgusting 340 pound amorphous blob, to now possessing a fit physique. I exercise daily. I no longer fear an out-of-order elevator; I no longer walk by the booth at my favorite diner and I don’t need the seat-belt extender when I fly.

I, once again, shout loud and proud — I WAS FAT THEN, BUT I’M FIT NOW! !

Thanksgiving Eating


The Thanksgiving holiday is 2 weeks out.   The diet experts are starting to rear

their heads, preaching how we must diet through the holiday.  Therefore, these self-proclaimed experts are blabbing about, giving endless, and pretty much useless, tips on how to stay on a diet.

A client me asked what I was going to eat on Thanksgiving.  I told her the same things she should — whatever I like.

I own the word diet. 

A diet is what we eat. 

Generally for me, that means an as close to nature as possible, low carbohydrate, whole food diet. On the occasional day that I don’t follow my usual diet, I consider them open eating days.

In my book, Obesity Undone, I have outlined what internet, low carb guru, Jimmy Moore coined,  ”planned splurges.”  These are days when we predetermine not to be strict. The holidays can, and in my opinion should, be planned splurges.  I wish I could be like fellow Chiropractor Jack LaLanne and eschew unhealthy sugar for all of my life, it is a goal for which I strive, but until then, I am going to indulge from time to time — I accept it, and I don’t let it bring me down.

Partaking, one day, every few months or even weeks, is not going to sabotage all of our hard work; after all, we are the master’s of our meals.  Being the masters, we must be disciplined and plan.  Not for the holiday — but for the day after. Of course this is only for those of us who do NOT have food issues, like celiac or gluten insensitivity or diabetes, etc…

1- Get rid of leftovers that are not part of our regular diet. I understand that it is wasteful, but if you are a low carber like me, the potatoes, stuffing, pie and the like go in the trash, keep the turkey and vegetables.  If the bad stuff isn’t there, neither is the temptation.  If our family members aren’t watching what they eat and want the leftovers, have them take the food with them.  If they live with you? Tough, they don’t get them either, toss them in the trash!!!

2- Plan the next day’s meals and snacks ahead of time.  After a day of cooking, setting-up, feasting and cleaning, you many not be in the mood to prepare proper foods.  To alleviate this potential problem, have our foods  ready and in the fridge.

3- Weigh ourselves the next day. Don’t get too hung up on the number because it will be up.  Yet, get on the scale.  The increased reading will keep us from making a one day splurge into a multi-week  food fest.

4- Exercise.  I make sure to work out Thanksgiving morning before everyone gets up and then I make sure to exercise first thing Friday morning.  It is important to maintain our exercise routines. No excuses! No carbohydrate loaded laziness! We must get off our asses and move.

Holidays are very food centric events.  The so-called experts will have us believe that we should not partake.  Here is the dirty little secret — we won’t be good.  Part of being human is enjoying food and company. In the U.S., this often goes hand in hand.  So, if we try to listen to the “experts”, but end up overindulging, instead of  simply eating bad one day, we are now over-loaded with both food and bad feelings and next comes the emotional eating that often accompanies guilt.

Remember, when we prepare ahead of time for the splurge and the day after, we will enjoy a guilt free holiday

Keep this one thought in mind:

It is not what we eat between Thanksgiving and Christmas that destroys our weight loss goals and fitness — It is what we eat between Christmas and Thanksgiving that does the damage.

Last week, I was doing the last round of outdoor work at my girlfriend’s yard when the above quote came to mind. I use a Old Fashioned Lawn Mowersmanual, human powered, push mower and non-mechanical hedge clippers.  I edge the lawn using hand held clippers.  I worked for three hours in beautiful sunshine with the only scent in the crisp air being that of fresh cut grass. There were neither lung chocking emissions, nor noise  of  motors nor engines to spoil the idyllic day.

A neighbor happened by and asked me about my non-mechanically aided endeavor. I stated it was not only enjoyable, but there was something very fulfilling to accomplish a task utilizing nothing but the strength of my body.  The person said, “But sometimes it is just better for work to be easier.”   I disagreed, however, I seem to be in the minority.

In today’s society we seem to have slipped into a false truth — that if it is easier, it is better. We have remote controls for everything; the television, garage door, fans and even air conditioners all have little devices so we no longer must heft ourselves out of our comfy seats and move. Hell, if you count the clapper, we don’t even have to get off of our rear-ends to operate a light switch.

Go out in public and you will find doors that open automatically, two-story shopping malls with escalators and you need but a wave of the hand to start water flowing from a sink or dispense a paper towel — often times we don’t even have to flush the toilet.

In society today, it seems that we are always looking for the path of least resistance — the path that takes the least amount of work is the path most often chosen. Even in the gym, where people are working out to get more fit, one can observe the same pattern. If say a person wants to use 50 pound dumbells for an exercise, but the weight is not there, many will go down to the 45′s instead of up to the 55′s.

Why not, while using proper form and safety precautions, test one’s self and go up in weight a bit?  Why not make it tad harder?

We are bombarded by marketing ploys that are supposed to make being healthy easy. Products will help us lose weight without any effort, they even market exercise machines that will magically produce results with little to no effort. Isn’t the f*&^ing point of exercise to promote effort?

Everywhere you travel foods of convenience dot the landscape.  Sugar filled, carbohydrate loaded junk is marketed and often promoted as health food.  Atkins, Low Carb, Paleolithic and Primal diets are dismissed by media “doctors” such as Dr. Melina Jampolis and othe “experts” who receive income from the industries that are destroying health.

We have moved away from the “Strenuous Life” President Theodore Roosevelt so extolled.

Our schools continue to cut out recess and shortened gym classes, yet President Roosevelt used his belief in the strenuous life to overcome childhood ailments. He strongly believed in the adage that a fit mind requires a fit body to house it. He exercised, engaged in sport, he even skinny dipped in the Potomac River during the winter.  While even under the best conditions, I would never consider swimming in the Susquehanna River as it runs along the Pittston to Wilkes-Barre corridor, I admire Teddy’s attitude and drive when it came to pursuing The Strenuous Life.

Our current President took more than a year to fill positions on The President’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sport & Nutrition. So, as the First Lady was admirably campaigning to increase awareness of childhood obesity, President Barack Obama delayed action on the council that was founded to encourage American children to be healthy and active.  This is the same President, who is so myopic, that he thinks insurance guarantees good health.  Am I missing something?

In his 1899 address before he Hamilton Club, in of all places Chicago, Teddy Roosevelt asked the question, “Who among you would teach your boys that ease is to be the first consideration in their eyes—to be the ultimate goal after which they strive?

It seems that by today’s standard, the answer would be; most. Thanks to the conveniences of modern society life is easier.  However, considering the soaring obesity rates, both adult and childhood, are the results of ease worth the price?

So I ask the questions  — Are we teaching our young men and women to strive for ease? If we are — How much damage are we doing?  And, will the mind rot as the body fails?

A Negative Attitude Produces Negative Results

Sometime within the last year, my friends began to notice a definite change in my end of day mood.  Most days, I was up at 4 a.m. and I am in the gym by 5.  After my workout, I would teach and then it was off to my practice, where I worked until 7 p.m. most nights.  I just assumed that the long days were getting to me, but then I remembered what I had been doing differently — I was listening to local talk radio and reading plenty of hate filled, depressing websites and blogs.

Since I am between my office and patients during practice hours,  I usually hear good portions of the various shows and I am on and off the web with some frequency.  Hours of listening to,  or reading about, how awful the world is, how bad people are, and how sorry our lot in life is, can drain even the most positive attitude.

As many times as I have discussed with people, or have done it myself, it never ceases to amaze me the power of cutting negative influences from our lives.  It really should be a no brainer.  Negativity begets negativity, producing overall negative results.

I have advised people to get negative people out of their lives.  However, that is not always easily accomplished in personal relationships — but it is easy when it comes to negative people whom we invite into our lives via the airwaves or our personal computers  — change the station, close the web window or switch off the device.

On my web site Fat Then Fit Now, and in my writings, I mention the 3′s: 

The 3 D’s — DesireDetermination and Discipline as the keys to remodeling one’s body and recapturing one’s health.

The 3 E’s — Three E’sEatingExercise and Energy. The Energy component being mental energy.

Together, these two triads are the keys to success in becoming a physically fit and healthy individual.

The D’s and E’s must be given equal effort to achieve our goals. While none of the 3′s are more essential than the other, a lack of positive mental energy can cause you to falter and interfere with the triads of support.

Energy is about our mindset. Our mental energy allows every other aspect to fall into place. If  mental energy is off kilter, it can adversely impact the other legs of the triangle, causing a complete, catastrophic collapse.

There are only two types of energy; positive and negative. Each usually gives rise to one of two outcomes — positive energy produces positive results and negative energy gives negative results.

The rigors of  daily life can get in our way, and before we know it, our mental energy is being thrown out of balance. We may be doing everything else correctly, but our results aren’t what we expect.

What is going on?

What are we doing wrong?

It is then we must recall that all three must be equal to achieve the desired outcomes.

Recently, my mind and body were both tired and drained — I just didn’t know it. And next thing I knew, my eating and exercise faltered and fell by the wayside, and I was not being as productive as I should  have been.

I am often reminded of the battle between positive versus negative energy when I have taken long weekends in the past to either The Florida Keys, or Southern California.

Five days of no news, no talk radio, no internet, no business worries and in general no negative influences really recharged my mental batteries.

Additionally, just being in Southern California or Florida, compared

to Northeast Pennsylvania, there is a palpable difference in attitude. The sunshine, warm temperatures and proximity to the ocean allow a variety of outdoor activities. It was my experience and conclusion that people there, even in tough economic times, have a much more positive outlook on life. That positive vibe rubs off on everyone who is there.

When I return to Pennsylvania, this renewed energy translated into some incredible  workouts.  I attacked the weights with vim and vigor, relishing the feel of cold iron in the palms of my hands.

The exercises are the same, but the poundages are a little heavier and the pace a little quicker and the results — exponentially superior.

This simple, yet noticeable, difference in my workouts, are what me re-aware of the influence of energy. I have taken steps to ensure that my energy remains positive.

  • I make sure to start my day with a smile.
  • I have resolved to no longer to complain.
  • I shrug off the mundane, minor, minuscule annoyances that tend to degrade my disposition.

I have also stopped listening to so much talk radio, visiting certain web blogs/sites and reading too in-depth into the news. I scan the paper, and if I feel something is important, I will delve deeper into the subject.  I am no longer obsessed with each bit of minutia that is being reported. I discovered on my long weekends, that by not reading the paper, not watching the news, not being connected to the web, and not listening to talk radio — nothing changed. My being aware had absolutely zero influence.

We should always strive to make each day full of positive energy.  When someone complains,  smile and make an excuse to remove ourselves from the conversation. If negative thoughts enter our heads, we should think about all we have that is good. In my case, if I start to feel sorry for myself, I remember my trips to places like the Philippines, were I saw some of the worst poverty I have ever witness, and force myself to realize that no matter how bad it seems, my life is pretty dam good.

Energy must be positive. I am not saying we are never going to get down. I am not saying we should never get upset. There are real life issues that will influence our mood. However, we can change so much just by changing our attitude and outlook. It takes just as much effort to smile and say hello, as it does to look away and grunt. But the result of a smile is much more positive, not only for one’s self, but for the person on the receiving end.

We must ask ourselves:

  • Will worrying about something change it?
  • Will losing sleep change it?
  • Will not working out change it?
  • Will overeating change it?

In all likelihood, all of the above will only be more deleterious to the situation and our health.

When possible, cut out negative influences, don’t become obsessed and worried about that which we have little control over. When it comes to controlling elements around us, we really can’t.

We can’t control the weather, world affairs or other people, however, we can control how we react. We can choose the manner in which we respond.

I tell all of  my clients — the only thing we can control is what we put into their bodies and the amount of exercise we put out. I also tell them the only person we can control is the one that stares back at us from the mirror.

We can be positive or we can be negative — the choice is ours —  the results are obvious.
