Will I Give In To Adversity?

This is a modified re-posting that originally appeared

in 2011. As my life situation becomes bleak,

I felt the need to revisit this posting and share.

After all I have been through, life continues throwing me some heavy-duty, rib-breaking, Rocky Balboa type body blows. I am aware that compared to many I am blessed, but on occasion, today being one of those occassions — I don’t feel that way.

The reality of owning a business and making some bad business decisions, in these current economic times can weigh heavy upon one’s psyche.  Very real pressure can crush even the strongest and broadest shoulders.  Some days, I feel much like I did in the past. Similar situations caused apathy, which in turn led to laziness. The result was that my weight ballooned to a ponderous, pachydermian three hundred and forty pounds and my fitness levels plummeted to previously unforeseen depths. I am aware that it was a slow way of ending my existence.

This morning , when the alarm clock sounded, for the first time in a year, I had the desire to unplug the chronograph, roll back over and continue my slumber. Reawakened by my current situation, my inner demons reared their ugly heads.

Visions of carbohydrate crammed foods danced in  my head.  Pancakes, home fries, doughnuts and waffles for breakfast started bubbling to the forefront of my brain. Later, I could go for a pizza and a nice pot of macaroni. Then, in the evening, maybe a pie and a pint or two of ice cream.  Ah yes, the comfort foods would work their soothing magic.

The demons screamed into my skull:

Why exercise?
Why eat right?

What is the point?

I knew that the combination of sloth and gluttony would once again isolate me from the outside world. The calming influences of empty calorie, nutrient devoid foods would help me sleep. The lack of exercise would convert the excess consumption into a protective lard layer and I would once again be isolated from the rest of the human race and speed my journey to the final destination.Dante and Virgil in Hell

I felt like I was being held from Hell’s fires by a proverbial rope.  I glanced up and studied the rope that has kept me afloat in even the worse situations. I noticed that the repair jobs from the previous occasions in which life almost took me down, were once again worn and frayed. The gremlins and graveling, which were busily hacking away at the rope, were more than half way through.

As my gazed remain fixed; I pondered a few thoughts:

Will the rope give all together?

Will my life and future plummet into a great abyss and would I care?

It very well might. When it desires, life can be a cold and heartless bastard. The big question is:

Will I embrace my inner demons  and willingly hasten my demise?

I stayed in bed and wondered what it would be like to have had a charmed life. I asked myself more questions.

How different would it have been if my father hadn’t been forced onto disability by a life altering injury?

How would it have been if my parents could have afforded to send me straight to college out of high school?

Was my judgment to enter the Navy, to alleviate the burden of at least one child to care for, the correct decision?

Yes, the self-doubt and self-pity of despair were being cheered on by the demons. Much like the negative focused naysayers, my inner mischievous sprites were acting as the harbingers of doom — joyfully, fanning my flames of despair, discontent, doubt and disillusionment.

How easy would it be to embrace their self-destructive message!
How simple would it be to return back to my former indolence!
How effortless would it be to add a hefty burden to the rope!

As these thoughts ran through my head, a truck driver outside my window slammed on the brakes. As the tractor-trailer came to a very loud halt, its cargo violently shifted and I was jarred by a thunderous clang. My still sleeping brain interpreted the clamor into the clang of iron plates being dropped onto the gym floor.

Thoughts of clanging and banging iron sent a familiar shiver through my body.

I jumped from my bed.  The demons hid in terror.  I would not give into their cursed cheering.

There is no time for self-pity.
There is no time for self-sorrow.
There is no time for self-destruction.

The rope is starting to show threads and I am not sure how long it will hold out. However, I will not increase its burden by adding weight to my frame.

As much as we tend to think otherwise, there is very little in our lives over which we have control.

Well run businesses fail.
Bad, at times awful, things happen to good people.
Politicians pass laws regardless of the actual outcomes.
Hard working, loyal employees often find themselves without a job.

Is adversity a setback or an opportunity?

It is all in  how we choose to view it. We can allow bad luck, bad decisions and just flat out bad situations dominate, control and beat us down, or  —  we can choose how we respond.Fallen angels in Hell

You see, I choose how I respond. I choose not to allow those demons that are screaming effect me.  And, I choose to tell those demons to go straight back to hell!

The one thing we can control is ourselves.

We can control our mental attitude.
We can control our fitness level.
We can control what we eat.

In spite of Gary Taubes’s anti exercise writings, I continue my endeavors in exercise. I am confident that by being physically fit and strong, if that rope does give out, I will be powerful enough to reach up, grab the remaining end and support myself.

The Calories In/Calories Out Paradigm — The Key To Long Term Weight Management FAILURE!

vaca 2014 lovin the beach

ORIGINALLY POSTED JANUARY 2012

vaca 2014 zuma panorama

****The following is NOT and in depth explanation, it simply scratches the surface to get folks thinking and talking.  Joe****

The mythical calories in/calories out ideology has been perhaps one of the biggest obstacles in successfully managing obesity and very well maybe one of the direct causes of the current obesity crisis.  I am sure you have heard that to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you take in.  The correlation can, on the surface, appear to make sense — however, in reality it doesn’t.  It may help you lose weight, regardless if it is fat or muscle or fluid.  Calorie restriction can negatively effect body mass.  How many of those who follow calorie restriction, no matter how they exercise, are skinny/fat?  Yes, it will work in the short term, but can you basically starve yourself for long term obesity management?  Following this theory, your weight should dramatically fluctuate from day-to-day, week to week and month to month, based on how much more activity you either put out or how much more or less food you consume.  Human physiology does NOT work that way.

The simple fact is — a calories is NOT a calorie.  Basic physiology will tell us that the human body will process different foods in different ways. The processing of different foods is heavily influenced by the release of hormones, one in particular is insulin.  This is the reason why low carbohydrate eating is such an effective means of not only losing weight, but keeping it off — permanently.

Those that espouse the calorie model of weight management will try to convince you that it doesn’t matter what you eat, just so long as you restrict the number of calories you consume.  So you can eat, say 1,500 calories a day.  To the advocates of caloric restriction it doesn’t matter if you eat 1,500 calories of ice cream, steak, bread, potatoes, chicken, fish, candy,… okay, you get the idea.  Just as long as you restrict caloric intake, you will lose weight.

English: Macro photograph of a pile of sugar (...

You want to know something, this may work, to a point.  However, for a large majority of folks, it will not work in the long-term, and it will definitely not help improve your overall health.  If you are consuming 1,500 calories of sugar, every day, your pancreas is secreting large amounts of insulin, eventually, potentially, leading to insulin related issues including weight gain, obesity and, as Paula Deen was recently diagnosed with, type II diabetes.Grain products are often baked, and are rich s...

The body does not process carbohydrates, proteins and fats the same way.  It is pretty obvious that simple carbohydrates and to a large extent, complex carbohydrates, have a negative effect on the human body.  All carbohydrate, with the exception of fiber is eventually broken down into a simply sugar — so, all those complex carbs you have been dutifully consuming all become either glucose, fructose or galactose.  They will all cause insulin to be released, and if not utilized almost immediately, the excess energy will be stored as fat in the body.

It does matter where your calories come from, it does matter in which form you consume them and it does matter to your overall health what you eat.

I am an advocate of low carbohydrate eating.  Not simply restricting carbohydrates, but eating foods that are not processed and do not contain large amounts of non-fibrous carbohydrate.  I eat foods in as close to the natural state as possible, so I am also an advocate of paleolithic and primal eating.  By combining these two approaches, I have kept my weight in check for the last two years.  Most importantly, the long term benefits are an active, fit and healthy quality of life.

The Great Paradox: To Live A Better Life; Embrace The Certainty Of Your Death

I wrote and posted this in Jan. 2012, before the stress of that upcoming summer changed my life, and my bad choices led to a obesity relapse.  I now read this posting every day.  I must never forget and allow my choices to ever again give the bastard obesity a foothold in my life.

Benjamin Franklin 1767

“…in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”  Benjamin Franklin

…all living things have to die. … We all die, some of us sooner then later.” Georgia Lass

Dead Like Me: Life After Death

There are events in our lives that make us aware of our own mortality.  I have had three definitive instances in my lifetime that have done this.  Unfortunately, that was all those particular instances did — made me aware.

Most of us know that one day we are going to die.  As we have grown into adulthood we have lost loved ones and we reflect on their life and we take a moment, especially if someone dies suddenly or unexpectedly,  to realize that one day that will be us.  Sometimes we reflect for more than a moment, other times even less.  However long we reflect or pause, we move on and forward, but inside we may not genuinely believe that one day that will be us.

Our mortality is one of those intangibles in life because it is so hard to grasp.  We learn by experience, and while a brush with death, battling a life threatening illness or a near death experience may remind us that we are merely mortal, we may not actually accept the fact.

You see that is, in my opinion, the difference that really matters.  We can be aware that we will one day die, but we may not really in our hearts accept it.  For most of us we look at our deaths as something that may happen and if we concede the certainty, we cling to the belief that it is a day that is a long way off.

After my cardiac catheterization I went from being aware of, to accepting of my ultimate demise.  It was a moment that freed me of many of my worries and concerns.  To not only know, but genuinely, whole-heartedly accepted the one truth about life, my person was suddenly set free.

I have written about the detriments of negative energy in the past.  It was a concept that I was always well aware of, but until the moment of my mortality acceptance, it was more metaphysical than substantive. When I embraced my mortality, when I accepted that one day I will die — it was then that I fully began to live.

I no longer allow the, often times, real worries of daily living to impact my life.

I no longer allow the uncontrollable actions of others to dampen my joy of living.

I no longer complain, whine and chatter endlessly about the unimportant aspects of every day existence.

I do not love nor even like, the area in which I reside.  I don’t like the attitude of despair and hopelessness. I am not a fan of cold temperatures, icy roads, snow or any other aspect associated with winter in the Northeastern Untied States. However, right now at this moment in time, this is where I am.  I am here because of decisions that I made, so instead of bemoaning the aspects I don’t care for, I focus exclusively on the positives that are present.

Because I not only acknowledge and accept, but dare I say relish my mortality, I embrace the dawn of each and every new morning. When I go out for a jog in the sometimes very frigid morning air, I allow the briskness of the atmosphere to stimulate my senses. When the white precipitations falls from the sky, instead of grumbling about shoveling it, I look forward to the manual work I am physically capable of performing.

It is also about perspective:

  • In the cold temperatures, I have a warm place to sleep.
  • In tough financial times, I have a family to love me and a family for me to love.

I no longer put off enjoying my life.  I recently went to Southern California to visit my sister and nephews.  Money isn’t as free as it has been in the past.  For a very brief moment I thought I should not go.  I juggled some bills, put off others and made the trek west.  The boys will only be young for a brief period of time and I want to be part of it as often as I can.

Because living a fit life is living a better life I have been quoted as saying, “Eat and exercise as if you will live forever; live as if you will die tomorrow.”

I have a goal of changing my residence to a warmer climate, near the ocean and earning enough to unite my family in that one location, yet as I work and plan toward that goal, I accept, that for reasons beyond my control, my life may end before I get there so — I will not allow today to pass in hopes of a tomorrow that may never arrive.
