Consistency: The Key To Success In The Pursuite Of A Better Life

Monday, Wednesday and Friday my alarms awakens me a little after 4 a.m., Tuesday and Thursday just after 5 a.m., Saturdays about 6 a.m. and Sundays it doesn’t sound at all, but I am usually awake by 7.  Each and every morning I bound out of bed, head to the kitchen and pour myself a cup of coffee.  I check my gym bag to make sure that I have all necessary items to shower and dress after my workout.

I call up Facebook on my smart-phone and make a simple posting: GOOD MORNING, COFFEE, JOG THEN GYM.  The simple posting is intended for all my Facebook friends, but also specifically for those who have purchased my book, are clients of Better Life Seminars and have contacted me relating that I have inspired or motivated them to lose weight.  I post on Facebook to demonstrate one of the keys to conquering obesity — consistency.  One of my Facebook friends picked up on that by commenting; “You are so fantastically predictable, thank you for your daily consistency.”

When it comes to almost anything in life, to make gains in a positive manner, consistency is key.  Inversely, if you are consistently inconsistent, your progress will be slowed or reversed.  To improve your fitness level, you must consistently follow your exercise program.  To lose body fat, you must consistently eat a reduced carbohydrate diet.  The key is to be consistent, because consistency is what will brings you your desired results.  Again, if you are consistently inconsistent, you will have results, however they may not be the results you desire.

If you exercise one day one week; two days the next, six the following, then don’t work out for two weeks and pick up with another work out…you get the picture…. you will not improve your fitness level or your physique.
If you eat properly for five days in a row, then on the sixth day have pancakes for breakfast, pasta and bread for lunch, breaded chicken and french fries for dinner interspersed with snacks of bagels, doughnuts and ice cream; okay I may no longer be morbidly obese and I don’t eat like that any more, but my mouth is starting to water a little bit …. Okay the cravings passed, the point is, eating good a few days and eating garbage for another day or two  or three isn’t going to improve your health and help you shed excess body fat.

Body Fat meterTo shed excess body fat and remodel your physique, you must do some type of exercise each and every day, you must eat properly each and every day and you must stay focused and keep your mental energy positive each and every day.  Consistent effort will produce consistent results.  Consistency is the key to conquering obesity and enjoying a more healthful, active and fit life.  As I have said often; I don’t take care of myself to live longer —- I take care of myself to live better, and via consistenteffort, I have achieved that goal.

The older you get the fatter you get. Really? I don’t think so!


Today on the radio I heard a commercial for yet another weight loss without effort product. Accuracy be dammed. The commercial was full of standard, pseudo-scientific hokum, designed to separate one from their cash.  Typically I ignore these ads, however, there was one quote that got my attention.

One quote that preyed upon the fears of many people.
One quote that I know to be patently absurd, but I also know people will believe.
One quote that many use as an excuse for allowing their bodies to degrade and become burden’s on our nation’s health-care system.

What is that quote?

“The older you get the fatter you get.”

My attention was caught.
My concentration was brought to the radio.
My Sicilian blood boiled as anger fueled seething rage.

This load of garbage was being affirmed as if it were simply a fact.

This myth was being utilized to sell hopeful, distraught persons a magical cure to the current epidemic of obesity.

This old wives tale was being broadcast over the trusted public airwaves to exploit a gullible and desperate listening audience.

The older you get the fatter you get is simply a stupid statement — don’t you believe it. Perhaps a more accurate proclamation might be the lazier you get the fatter you get.

As I have written in the past, unless there is an underlying medical cause, there is no reason, aging or any other, for one to become obese. Obesity is a result of poor eating habits and lack of proper exercise.

My experience has been, the older I am  the fitter I am. The truth is that people who follow my plan don’t believe any of the standard drivel that is being propagated. They are living proof that if you follow the FatThenFitNow.com plan of consuming low carbohydrate, close to nature foods and including the correct exercise routines, getting fatter is not an option.

The problem with most of these weight reduction programs and products is that they are pushing the much desired fable of weight loss without effort. They will use the lazy desire to drop weight without changing eating or exercise habits to enhance their profits. If you were to believe their hype then you could eat to your heart’s content and have the body of Adonis or Athena. Well I myself, at one time or another, had tried almost every plan on the market. I am well aware that this is not the case. The only weight I did lose was in my wallet and bank account. The net effect, without embracing a fit lifestyle, was a rebound in weight and a more miserable existence.

Those who follow the FatThenFitnow.com plan understand that well-being is much more than just about the numbers on the scale. It is about overall good health and weight loss is a side effect of fitness.

To develop a good physique, to drop ugly disgusting body fat and to enjoy better health takes an investment. It is a combination of the threes.

The three D’s:

Desire

Discipline

Determination

And the three E’s:

Eating

Energy

Exercise

Don’t fall victim to the hype.

Don’t throw away hard-earned money.

Don’t ignore the old adage; “if it is too good to be true, it isn’t.”

I took control of my life, I can help others take control of theirs. I went from a disgusting 340 pound amorphous blob, to now possessing a fit physique. I exercise daily. I know longer fear an out-of-order elevator; I no longer walk by the booth at my favorite diner and I don’t need the seatbelt extender when I fly.

I shout loud and proud — I WAS FAT THEN, BUT I’M FIT NOW!

What is Stressful?

In a recent column I asked the question;Should exercise be fun? In that posting I responded that I did not believe fun was an overriding factor in what exercises you should choose, or have any influence in whether or not you should exercise. I even opened up with a quote from arguably one of the fittest people who has ever graced the planet earth, Jack LaLanne, who often said, “…. to go into a cold gym takes a lot of discipline, boy, I’ll tell ya. … I never liked to exercise, but I like results.”

I stated in the blog post that I actually enjoy certain exercises, but I don’t believe I actually have fun exercising.  I went on to explain my rationale for opining that fun was NOT a factor in determining an exercise routine, that what was important was the fact that through exercise, one  would improve their health and fitness level and thus, have fun in other aspects of life.

I received responses ranging from agreement to some very vehement disagreement, most of which were sent to me via email.  Those who disagreed with me claimed a few common themes.  They stated that if they weren’t having fun, they may not actually workout and besides that by not having fun, working out could be too stressful and hamper progress.

I can understand those who might not want to exercise if they weren’t having fun, but come on its only an hour or so a day.  If everything you do, every hour of every day of your life is fun, then I can say with complete honesty — I envy you.  While I enjoy most aspects of my life, I can’t say that I have fun at everything I do.  Besides, simply enjoying activities does not always constitute fun.

The argument about stress is one of those comments that gets my Sicilian up. Now I am well aware that I may offend or insult some who are reading this.  Since I don’t get either offended or insulted, I am never sure what will offend or insult someone else. However, it is not my desire to do either; it is just my intent to give my honest assessment of the argument. Just be aware you may get insulted or offended, perhaps both. So, with that said…

…ARE YOU *&%$@#! KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Have we really become such a weak society that an hour or so of exercise each day, an activity that will improve our overall health, fitness, well being and allow us to better cope with every day stressors, is considered stressful?!? This is almost as flat out silly as a comment I received regarding daily weighing being too emotionally draining.  I say that if either of these particular activities stress you out, then perhaps you need to consider what exactly is stressful and that stress is an unavoidable part of every day life.

Often times, it is all about perspective.  It is one of those life lessons I learned in the military.  When I put a certain situation in perspective, the perceived stress really isn’t all that intense.

So, if you feel that jumping up on scale once a day is stressful; think of our very brave military men and women jumping out of the way of enemy fire in Iraq or Afghanistan. Compared to their jump — is yours really all that stressful?

If you are stressed out because the exercise you must endure for an hour each day isn’t fun; think of the single mother or father who may be lucky to get an hour with their child(ren) because they are going from job to job so they can earn enough money to put food on the table. Is an hour investment in fitness really all that stressful?

How about the parents who haven’t worked in more than a year and the bank is ready to foreclose and make them and their children homeless.  Or how about a parent fighting cancer and coping with the possibility that they may not be around to care for their children. Or even worse, the parents that have to face the unimaginable, tragic and horrific diagnosis that their young child has cancer and may not be with them for Christmas this year.

I understand that at times I am harsh, and that this time I may be extremely so.  However, losing perspective and allowing perceived stress to win out over genuine stress cost me much, including all of my life savings, my marriage, my fitness, my health and almost my life.  We are facing an obesity epidemic.  An epidemic that effects both adults and children.  What is most disturbing is that it is an epidemic of our own making; an epidemic that requires inner strength in the form of  desire, determination and discipline to overcome.  So, if I get a little irate at whiny, mental weakness that some folks may turn into excuses, that others will take further into indolence and thus contribute to our obesity epidemic then I apologize — NO I take that back; I make no apologies for my effort to save a few lives and improve the quality of life for many more.

Should Exercise Be Fun?

I was reading on one of the many Facebook pages I belong to and someone was asking about not feeling up to a workout.  Some

of the responses suggested that workouts must be fun.  As I read them I had to ask myself two questions:

Are my workouts fun? Do they need to be?

My exercise routine is spit into two portions:

Strength training, in which I use weight lifting.

Endurance training, in which I use a combination of jogging, sprints and rope skipping.

Yes, I will admit that there is something exhilarating about pitting myself against cold, unyielding iron.  I look forward to my mornings in the gym.  If I am pressed for time, I always get in some sort of weight training. While I do relish weightlifting, I’m not sure if the word fun would be an apt descriptor.

When it comes to jogging; I like the the time alone, free from distractions, outside enjoying the weather, but do I have fun? Not really. I am not even sure I even enjoy the activity itself.  I am not really built for running, either physically or mentally, but because of the results I attain,  I get out there and I do it.

I am not sure if fun should be part of the criteria for going out and exercising or even in  the choice of a particular exercise.  I pick and chose my routine for the results I am going to achieve.  When I am bulking up and adding strength, my weight training is slower and the weights I use are much heavier.  I still jog, but I cover less distance and I do it at a much slower pace.  When I a leaning out, I decrease the poundage and I move much quicker.  I cover more distance when I jog, I do it at a faster pace and I include rope skipping and sprints.

No matter what my particular goal is, I always include both progressive resistance and endurance training.  They both contribute to the overall result I am looking to achieve.

Is fun important?  I guess it could be, but it isn’t a requirement.  Exercise should be done to improve the overall quality of life.  While I don’t really consider my exercise routine fun, it makes much of the other activities that I engage in much more fun. When I was in Chiropractic school I spent hours upon hours studying for classes, quizzes, exams and boards.  Did I have fun during all that study time? I would have to say no, but it was necessary to achieve my goal.  I look at exercise much the same way.  My goal in regards to exercise is not to have fun during my exercise time; it is to achieve an improved level of fitness. The fun is in the results —

-because I am fit, I am able to hike longer and more difficult trails.

-because I am fit, I am able to participate more actively in beach and ocean activities

-because I am fit, I am able to live every aspect of my life much fuller and with much greater joy.

So, is fun a requirement when it comes to choosing an exercise routine? Perhaps to some, but it wasn’t to Jack LaLanne and it really isn’t to me.  I am much more concerned with the results of the exercises I pick.  Taking into account travel to the track, then to the gym, showering and dressing — only about ninety minutes of my day is focused on exercise. While fun is nice; I prefer effectiveness, which in turn  improves the quality of  the remaining twenty-two and a half  hours (and, yes, I sleep better because of exercise) of my day.

Steve Corbett: NEPA’s Enemy of the State of Health and Fitness


I used to write a weekly post entitled Enemies of the State of Health & Fitness (ESHF). The weekly posting was a serious look at public people I viewed, in my opinion,  as contributing to our nation’s obesity epidemic.  I received a lot of flack because of what was perceived as personal attacks.  The posts were taking to task certain individuals for their contributory words or actions that were detrimental to people’s health and wellness.  So, in an effort to take the edge of my image I made a conscious effort to dial it down a bit and even discontinued my ESHF weekly postings.

The kinder and gentler version Fat Then Fit Now’s respect for others has been met with mostly negative reviews.  People have emailed and called me telling me they like the my harder edged comments and writings.  I was told that in an effort to be nicer, I allowed others to give unchallenged and often times, erroneous information.

I thought long and hard about both the compliments and criticisms I received.  I did give other viewpoints due respect, even when that point of view was well of the mark and perhaps, unintentionally gave the perception that I agreed with the misinformation.   Well those days are over.  While I will continue to aspire to be respectful, I will no longer bite my tongue to the point that my taste buds are covered in scar tissue.

So, without further delay, I bring back ENEMIES OF THE STATE OF HEALTH & FITNESS . Today, I reboot the franchise with WILK talk jock Steve Corbett. Perhaps the worst kept secret in my little world is the low regard in which I hold Steve Corbett.  His negativity and hate based entertainment talk show is perhaps the prime example of how a bottom feeder plays into other people’s fears and lot in life to boost one’s own interest.  I have written extensively on the negative effects negative energy produces.  Today, his negativity is not the reason for his heading the new and improved ESHF.  No, the reason Steve Corbett heads the reintroduction of ESHF is because of his healthful eating hypocrisy and over the top promotion of lard layering food and drink.

From Steve Corbett’s mouth a fountain of misinformation flows forth spouting the supposed virtues of his extreme vegetarian views.  He proclaims with pseudo-expert aplomb that meat is bad and soy based tofu is good.  He promotes this in the face of many studies that demonstrate that soy’s benefits have been overstated and that in men, soy can have many detrimental effects including; thyroid issues, estrogen like effects and decreased testosterone levels. Even if I believed that a vegetarian diet was in fact healthful; Steve does not present an outward appearance of physical vitality such as high carb, vegan advocate Harley “DurianRider” Johnstone.

However, what is worse is that the self proclaimed promoter of healthful living spends so much of his programing promoting unhealthy eating and drinking choices.  He waxes poetic about drinking wine nightly, for a few pieces of silver he endorses foods that are nothing more than over-processed starch and sugar products and extolls his haphazard exercise regiment. Combined, his attitudes will promote the ever expanding waistlines of Northeast Pennsylvania’s citizens, leading them to the fate of obesity, type II diabetes and a lower quality of life.

Steve will vilify the sport of mixed martial arts, desiring to ban contests in the entire country.  Yet, he will ignore the simple fact that fewer people will die or suffer life changing injuries  in an MMA contest  than will suffer and die from obesity related ailments.  So I ask, how responsible is it for someone, who so desires a Nanny State of America to protect every citizen’s health and well being, to outwardly glorify the consumption of obesity causing foods and drinks?

Effective Methodology For Losing Weight and Achieving Fitness


If you have lost weight, tried to lose weight or are just thinking about losing weight you have undoubtedly been inundated by advertising.

Be it television, radio, spam, billboards,  hell even folks walking the streets with sandwich boards… you are hit by a plethora of quick fix weight loss promising products..

Drink this in place of a meal and you will lose weight.

Order pre-packaged food and you will lose weight.

Take this “natural” pill and you will lose weight.

I’ve been exposed to them all, I’ve even tried a few. Everything from fasting, juicing, fruit only, to  vegetable only diets all promise rapid weight loss without effort.

I am always skeptical of the fast, fat-loss fads that claim to bring forth  miracles that are too good to be true. Why? Because they are too good to be true.Anyone who knows me, has heard me on the radio, podcasts, seen me on television,  has read my book or this blog is aware that I am an avid low carbohydrate follower. They also understand that I am more than just about a diet.  I am a firm believer in the power and benefits of exercise and fitness and weight loss is simply a side effect of fitness. I work out seven days a week.

The most effective way to lose weight and get in shape is following my plan. Okay, I’m a little biased. However, if you follow and apply the 3 D’s and the 3 E’s you have no option but to gain renewed health.

Desire to get in shape

Determine that you will do it.

Eat a diet low in carbohydrates, as close to nature and as unprocessed as possible

Exercise seven days a week. Include endurance, cardiovascular training along with

progressive resistance workouts.

Posses positive mental energy knowing that you will accomplish your goals and recapture your health.

Be consistent!

Strive for excellence!

Make your health a priority!

You won’t get there with haphazard plans or habits. You must work at it, there are no shortcuts, there is no free pass.

The results will be a fit new you, a healthy individual brimming with confidence and beaming with pride.
