Steve Corbett: NEPA’s Enemy of the State of Health and Fitness

I used to write a weekly post entitled Enemies of the State of Health & Fitness (ESHF). The weekly posting was a serious look at public people I viewed, in my opinion,  as contributing to our nation’s obesity epidemic.  I received a lot of flack because of what was perceived as personal attacks.  The posts were taking to task certain individuals for their contributory words or actions that were detrimental to people’s health and wellness.  So, in an effort to take the edge of my image I made a conscious effort to dial it down a bit and even discontinued my ESHF weekly postings.

The kinder and gentler version Fat Then Fit Now’s respect for others has been met with mostly negative reviews.  People have emailed and called me telling me they like the my harder edged comments and writings.  I was told that in an effort to be nicer, I allowed others to give unchallenged and often times, erroneous information.

I thought long and hard about both the compliments and criticisms I received.  I did give other viewpoints due respect, even when that point of view was well of the mark and perhaps, unintentionally gave the perception that I agreed with the misinformation.   Well those days are over.  While I will continue to aspire to be respectful, I will no longer bite my tongue to the point that my taste buds are covered in scar tissue.

So, without further delay, I bring back ENEMIES OF THE STATE OF HEALTH & FITNESS . Today, I reboot the franchise with WILK talk jock Steve Corbett. Perhaps the worst kept secret in my little world is the low regard in which I hold Steve Corbett.  His negativity and hate based entertainment talk show is perhaps the prime example of how a bottom feeder plays into other people’s fears and lot in life to boost one’s own interest.  I have written extensively on the negative effects negative energy produces.  Today, his negativity is not the reason for his heading the new and improved ESHF.  No, the reason Steve Corbett heads the reintroduction of ESHF is because of his healthful eating hypocrisy and over the top promotion of lard layering food and drink.

So Good Soy Milk

Image via Wikipedia

From Steve Corbett’s mouth a fountain of misinformation flows forth spouting the supposed virtues of his extreme vegetarian views.  He proclaims with pseudo-expert aplomb that meat is bad and soy based tofu is good.  He promotes this in the face of many studies that demonstrate that soy’s benefits have been overstated and that in men, soy can have many detrimental effects including; thyroid issues, estrogen like effects and decreased testosterone levels. Even if I believed that a vegetarian diet was in fact healthful; Steve does not present an outward appearance of physical vitality such as high carb, vegan advocate Harley “DurianRider” Johnstone.

However, what is worse is that the self proclaimed promoter of healthful living spends so much of his programing promoting unhealthy eating and drinking choices.  He waxes poetic about drinking wine nightly, for a few pieces of silver he endorses foods that are nothing more than over-processed starch and sugar products and extolls his haphazard exercise regiment. Combined, his attitudes will promote the ever expanding waistlines of Northeast Pennsylvania’s citizens, leading them to the fate of obesity, type II diabetes and a lower quality of life.

Image via Wikipedia

Steve will vilify the sport of mixed martial arts, desiring to ban contests in the entire country.  Yet, he will ignore the simple fact that fewer people will die or suffer life changing injuries  in an MMA contest  than will suffer and die from obesity related ailments.  So I ask, how responsible is it for someone, who so desires a Nanny State of America to protect every citizen’s health and well being, to outwardly glorify the consumption of obesity causing foods and drinks?

Effective Methodology For Losing Weight and Achieving Fitness

If you have lost weight, tried to lose weight or are just thinking about losing weight you have undoubtedly been inundated by advertising.

Be it television, radio, spam, billboards,  hell even folks walking the streets with sandwich boards… you are hit by a plethora of quick fix weight loss promising products..

Drink this in place of a meal and you will lose weight.

Order pre-packaged food and you will lose weight.

Take this “natural” pill and you will lose weight.

I’ve been exposed to them all, I’ve even tried a few. Everything from fasting, juicing, fruit only, to  vegetable only diets all promise rapid weight loss without effort.

I am always skeptical of the fast, fat-loss fads that claim to bring forth  miracles that are too good to be true. Why? Because they are too good to be true.Anyone who knows me, has heard me on the radio, podcasts, seen me on television,  has read my book or this blog is aware that I am an avid low carbohydrate follower. They also understand that I am more than just about a diet.  I am a firm believer in the power and benefits of exercise and fitness and weight loss is simply a side effect of fitness. I work out seven days a week.

The most effective way to lose weight and get in shape is following my plan. Okay, I’m a little biased. However, if you follow and apply the 3 D’s and the 3 E’s you have no option but to gain renewed health.

Desire to get in shape

Determine that you will do it.

Have the discipline to get it done.

Eat a diet low in carbohydrates, as close to nature and as unprocessed as possible

progressive resistance workouts.

Posses positive mental energy knowing that you will accomplish your goals and recapture your health.

Be consistent!

Strive for excellence!

Make your health a priority!

You won’t get there with haphazard plans or habits. You must work at it, there are no shortcuts, there is no free pass.

The results will be a fit new you, a healthy individual brimming with confidence and beaming with pride.

I wrote the below column two years ago.  I still receive comments about it so I thought I would re-post it here as a way to kick off the beginning of my 48th year on planet Earth — I absolutely  love getting older.  There are aspects of my life that could be better, and some that could be much worse.  Most importantly, I have a great family, relationship,  I am in good physical health and I am very fit,  but I do have 2 minor complaints; reading glasses and nose hair. So, in the grand scheme things are going well.

However, if you are ever feeling down and out about reaching your fitness goals, please read the following.  Joe

Inspiration

By: Joe Leonardi

As I am writing this the Thanksgiving holiday has just passed, it is time to get back on the workout wagon. A day of gorging and feasting is followed by a return to the track to run and the gym to lift weights.

The heating rays of our star Sol barely warm the northeast from November to March, but today’s cloud cover made for a particularly dank, dreary, desolate day. So gray were the skies that my usually high motivation to exercise was replaced by the blahs.

I completed my laps around the stadium oval and drove off to the second half of my daily, personal biathlon. I parked my car, hefted my bulk from the driver’s seat, opened the trunk and grabbed my gear. I slowly passed through the gym entrance closing the door to the dismal day behind me. I peered down the hallway and fought the urge to turn on my heel and exit. Eventually, I plodded my way down what felt like an unending corridor. A stop at my locker to put my clothes away lasted longer than usual. I finally progressed to the weight room trying to come up with any excuse not to.

I scanned around hoping that someone was using the leg press machine – no one was. I stared at the one hundred pound plates I would need to lug up and onto the machine and thought ‘maybe I’ll just use the forty-fives’. My mind and body were both in agreement, I was not in the mood, but I forced myself onward.

As I neared the equipment the sun caught my eye. It was not the center of our solar system, it was the rays emanating from a young girl pausing between sets of her routine. A broad smile dominated her face as she talked with her barking, bellicose personal trainer. She then turned her attention back to the cold, unyielding iron. A smile no longer was apparent, it was replaced by a look of ferocious intensity. It is a look I have seen before; in the eyes of the elite athletes I have trained with and treated over the years – it was the look of a champion.

Then I noticed something that should have been apparent, but I was so caught up in first her joy for what she was doing, then the intensity which she carried it out, I did not see that she was missing one arm and one leg. The inability to grip the bar with two hands did not deter this young person’s enthusiasm for her training. I smiled outwardly, but inwardly I was ashamed at my mental attempts to avoid exercise.

Inspiration is found in many forms, but on this day the ultimate inspiration was brought forth by another’s joy and passion; another’s delectation for an activity that I have had an on and off relationship with since my parents purchased my first barbell set from Sears when I was twelve years old. More inspirational though, was the way she was dealing with what was apparent adversity – seemingly she was ignoring it.

Cover of Rocky

In the last Rocky movie, when junior was complaining about trying to live in his father’s large shadow, Stallone’s iconic character uttered the following statement. “The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you!”

Sure it is a line from a movie, but the girl I watched today, she did not appear to cower. Now, I don’t know her story, I don’t know her name, I never saw her before today, I don’t know anything other than the following:

There are many excuses not to do, but there are few legitimate reasons. Life is not fair, it is not easy and no matter what our problems are, whether they appear trivial or extreme, they need to be handled and life needs to be more than just lived.

I was not the only one affected on this day. I chatted with another person who was equally inspired.

Finally, the word “can’t” should be abolished from my vocabulary. When I don’t feel like going to the gym or going to the track or facing a difficult situation I will forever remember what I saw today and will know what can be accomplished.

How Deep Is Your Desire To Beat Back Obesity?

I’m not sure if it my age; turning 47 next week, or having 3 genuine brushes with death, but I don’t get offended, insulted or embarrassed — to me, they are wasted emotions and signs of a weakness I have finally overcome.  However, occasionally, some things do, to varying degrees, get my “Sicilian Up.”

Someone said something to me this morning that didn’t really fire me up, but it did make me think about the best way to clear up a misconception and demonstrate how much I desired to beat back obesity.

I was going in to a store when I saw one of my former weight loss clients.  Well, not exactly a client,  the gentleman only came in for the initial meeting, purchased my book, and confidently proclaimed that he could do it on his own.  Well, one look at him and I realized he wasn’t sticking to the plan.  After some conversation, I offered to give him a free restart meeting to get him on track. I guess I struck a nerve, because his response was quite defensive.  He rattled of excuse after excuse about why he had not even started the plan.  After I rolled my eyes and gave him a look he said; “What would you know, your a doctor and you work for yourself, you have all the time you need to eat right and exercise.”

As I said, sometimes situations do get my Sicilian up, but this wasn’t one of them.  Deep from my gut, propelled by the contractions of my diaphragm, a loud belly laugh escaped my body. Anyone who knows me, knows what I have been through.  An illness and series of misdiagnoses caused me to be out of my office for an extended period of time. During and after this period, my business markedly declined and I lost every dime I had managed to save.   My mental weakness and response to the situation caused me to neglect my business even further and  I emotionally spiraled downward as my weight and girth ballooned upward.

However, this man didn’t know any of that, yet, I couldn’t contain my laughter. I think I offended, insulted or embarrassed him, since I don’t really get those emotions, I can’t be sure.  I assured him I wasn’t laughing at him and  I told him to read my blog later today in which I would respond to his claim.

I have often said, getting fit and dropping weight are genuinely easy, however, it does require commitment and proper planning.  What better way to demonstrate the misconception than to give an account of one of my days?  So, what follows is my day yesterday, Wednesday 9/14/11.  By the way, Wednesday’s is the day of the week my office is closed, you know — my off day.

  • 4:08am — Alarm sounds.  I hit the off button and say to myself several time, “Get up, get up, get up…!” I pause in the sitting position at the edge of my bed and consider laying back down.  I grab a picture of myself at 340 pounds and only need to glance at it for a moment before I spring up to my feet and head to the kitchen for coffee.
  • 4:20am — Finish up my coffee, brush my teeth, shave, double check my gear that I packed the night before, update Facebook for weight loss clients following me, get dressed and then leave for the gym.
  • 4:45am — Arrive at the gym.  Do my leg work out; 40 sets in just under 50 minutes, then go upstairs and do my abdominal workout.
  • 6:10am — Shower, change for the day and leave the gym.
  • 6:30am — Stop by my office.  Check and answer emails from Fat Then Fit Now clients, friends and students.
  • 6:50am — Leave my office.
  • 7:00am — Arrive for breakfast at Tony’s Diner in Kingston, had the best sausage and cheese omelet.
  • 7:30am — Depart Tony’s and head to the college.
  • 7:50am — Arrive at the college and get ready to teach my first class.
  • 8:55am — Class dismissed; off to the office (you know, the one that is closed for the day.)
  • 9:30am — Arrive at the office.  Write and publish blog post.  Answer more emails and Facebook inquires for people interested in my book.  Look over new info for the second edition of Fat Then Fit Now; A Life Beyond Weight Loss.
  • 10:30am — Have a snack of mixed nuts and unsweetened iced tea.
  • 10:45am — Get on Skype with the one and only Jimmy Moore and record a brief segment commemorating his 500th podcast episode.
  • 11:00am — Treat two emergency patients. Ordered lunch.
  • 11:30am — Stop at Leo’s Pizza where a grilled chicken salad w/blue cheese dressing is waiting for me. After lunch I head back up to the college.
  • 12:15pm — Arrive at the college and teach my second class of the day.
  • 1:15pm — Class dismissed.  Off to the lounge. Mix up a protein pudding (just enough water added to protein powder to give it a pudding like consistency) and eat it while I enter quiz grades and do some class prep work.  Take a few moments to “discuss” politics with a colleague.
  • 2:30pm — Teach third class of the day.
  • 3:55pm — Class dismissed.
  • 4:00pm — Teach fourth class of the day.
  • 5:50pm — Class dismissed, run to lounge and warm up chicken breast stuffed with artichoke, spinach and cheese that I prepared earlier in the week. Scarfed down dinner.
  • 6:00pm — Teach fifth class of the day.
  • 8:45pm — Class dismissed.
  • 9:15pm — Stop to see my girlfriend for a visit.
  • 10:00pm — Prepare gear, clothes and chose one the already prepared meals to pack for the next day, set up the coffee maker and the timer for 5:08am (I sleep in on Tues/Thursday), put clothes in the washing machine and then finally sit down and unwind with a little television.
  • 10:45pm — Go to bed, check to make sure alarm is set for 5:18am (I need to give the coffee time to brew), read until I fall asleep.

I am not one of those people, who sit around waisting {sic} their week, looking forward to Friday just so I can guzzle beer. I live each and every day to its fullest. I thrive on full, complete, productive days.  Don’t get me wrong, I like my leisure time, but even my leisure time is as active as possible. Being idle leads to indolence, which in turn, leads to an inflated physique.

The question is not whether it is possible to drop weight, get fit and recapture your health.  With the proper application of eating, exercise and mental energy through desire, determination and discipline, you not only can — you WILL achieve your goals.  The proper question to ask is; HOW DEEP IS YOUR DESIRE TO BEAT BACK OBESITY?

The other day, I received an email from fellow low carber and the founder of The Livin La Vida Low Carb Blog and Podcast, Jimmy Moore — Jimmy’s podcast is getting ready to hit a major landmark; EPISODE #500, and Jimmy asked me, as a former guest, if I would like to say a few words. Of course I jumped at the chance and after a couple of changes to my schedule, I sit here at my computer waiting for our Skype meeting.

For those of you who may not know who Jimmy Moore is or about his Livin La Vida Low Carb Blog, check it out as soon as you are done reading this posting. You, as I was and still am, will be blown away by the amount of great information.

It really seems like it was just a short time ago that I was a guest on The Livin La Vida Low Carb Podcast, but it was actually quite some time ago.  I was the guest on episode 252 that aired in May of 2009.

As most of you know, in March of 2008, I decided to take control of my life and begin an Odyssey From Fat Then To Fit Now.  I opted to travel the low carb road to get there and shortly after I began my journey, I came across Jimmy’s web site and became a regular reader and listener.  Although I had read much of the same research, as a clinician I use research in an applied manner and while I understand and know the details, I can’t cite them from memory.  Fortunately, Jimmy’s site is a treasure trove of research information, experts and links, which I have often referred to or referred others to read.

If memory serves me correctly, one of my clients contacted Jimmy, who in turn contacted me to be a guest.  When I received his correspondence I was completely floored.  It was a great honor to be asked to appear on what was and remains the premier web destination for low carb information and experts.  I remember the pre-show conversation we had and Jimmy said to me that we would record for about half an hour; if I was really interesting we might go to forty five minutes; well the show went about fifty five minutes and we had a really great exchange — even when we disagreed on a point or two.

It was my first of what has become many internet, radio and television appearances concerning weight loss, fitness and more recently childhood obesity and bullying.  A few moments ago, I listened to the interview and I am disappointed in myself that many of my ambitions for Fat Then Fit Now, the book, speaking tours and webinars have not been realized.  I can offer many excuses as to why, however we all know how I feel about excuses.  The fact is that I simply haven’t made the appropriate time to make it happen.  However, with the battle for our nation’s health and well being so important, I have now made the commitment and effort to make all of my ambitions reality.  There are many out there like Dr. Melina Jampolis spreading misinformation, Martin Kessman demanding victimhood status for his lack of personal responsibility and Chef Duff Godman encouraging overindulgent gluttony who must be challenged.  Their influences are among the many reasons that we have both an adult and childhood obesity epidemic destroying the health and wellness of our fellow citizens.

Jimmy Moore has been one of the leaders in spreading educational information and the truth about what a proper diet should be.  I am proud to be asked to offer my insight and I am proud to consider him a friend.

Excuses Hamper Obesity’s Defeat

{What I am about to write does not apply to those with an underlying medical or hormonal condition. I advise anyone embarking on a weight loss andfitness plan to have a thorough medical evaluation. You want to be sure that you are physically able to exercise and you don’t have any underlying medical conditions.}

In our efforts to beat back obesity, we are faced with many obstacles.  Some, as being a single parent or working several jobs, are genuinely difficult to overcome. Many others however, are nothing more than excuses.

I recently wrote a posting on excuses.  Excuses, are our own internal rationalizations for not staying on track. Often times, most excuses can be eliminated by proper planning and making minor adjustments.

A typical digital 12-hour alarm clock indicati...

I will use myself as an example; I currently teach an 8 a.m. class, I am in my office several nights a week until 7 p.m. and I teach until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays.  When will I have the time to get to the gym? Through proper planning and adjustments, I am able to juggle my schedule and workout daily.  In this case,  I arise at 4 a.m. and get to the gym by 5 a.m..  Problem solved.

Do I like it when the alarm goes off at 4 a.m.?  Not really, but once I am awake, I am off and exercising.

A woman on a treadmill (Original caption:

Another potential excuse, for me, is the fact that I do not like to jog on a treadmill. However, because at this point in my life, I can’t afford a preventable injury, I don’t like to run in snow, ice or darkness either.  So, if for some reason the weather or time doesn’t cooperate, I could use that as an excuse not to get my jog in.  How do I overcome it?  Easy, after I am done with the weights, I head upstairs and get my butt on the treadmill. What I may desire is completely irrelevant.  Yes,  my preference may be to run outside, but because of time constraints, inclement weather and/or the hour I wake up, I make my adjustment, suck it up and get on the treadmill.  The excuse is negated.

Unfortunately, we ourselves may not be the only excuse makers.  There are those around us more than willing to make excuses for us, they are the enablers.  Enablers are those around us who impede our efforts. These enablers are often times those who do not understand what it takes to drop a large amount of weight — or, they are simply lazy.

The prime tool of the enabler is probably the most harmful.  It is creating the myth of the difficulty factor, when in fact — there is no difficulty.

Yet, the saboteurs are out there whispering in your ear:

Why are you doing this?

It is just too hard.

Why not just give it up?

When in fact there protestations are untrue.

Some one had taken me to task over my claim that it is easy to lose weight and get in shape.  I guess this person and others expect me to act weak-willed and change my mind.

FAT CHANCE!

My response is this: It is easy. Additionally, you must tell yourself that it is easy.  I expand in my book, Fat Then Fit Now; A life beyond weight loss, that by consistently reinforcing the premise that it is easy, you will convince your brain, assisting with the mental energy that is so important to recapturing your health.

However the enabler, in this case, used an unfair comparison concerning their artistic ability.  The point was, while it comes easy to them, it may not come easy to someone else.  The analogy of using an inherent gift, as compared to disciplining one’s self, is akin to the proverbial apples and oranges.

I have an ability to take thoughts and ideas and express them via the spoken and written word.  It does come relatively easy to me, however, I would never claim that it is easy for someone else.

Body remodeling is a different story and the proof is in the pudding.  My clients who have adopted my approach relate to me that they have never experienced such success.  They all say the same thing; “I can’t believe how easy it is to do!” The fact is that if you implement my eating plan, exercise regime and mental energy reinforcements, in the absence of an underlying condition, you will lose weight and get fit.

As I have been quoted many times; “I don’t know if I am going to live longer, but I am living better!” If  you too desire to live a better quality of life  —-  dump the excuses and shun the enablers!

Kevin Smith, Southwest Airlines and My Own Experiences Revisited

Kevin Smith @ Macworld

I was recently discussing with a Fat Then Fit Now client about the past case of film director extraordinaire Kevin Smith being bumped from a flight because, it was reported, of his weight.  I related to my client of myself, back in my super heavyweight days, boarding a plane and holding my breath, waiting for those dreaded words, “You are too obese to fly.”

Back in my morbidly obese days most of my flights were not solo. I was usually accompanied by my significant other, so lifting the armrest and spilling into her seat was not an issue. However, I vividly remember for take-off and landing, with the armrests down,  I could manage to squeeze into the seat. However,  my extra mass spilled into the other seat. My body would mold itself over the top and the bottom of both armrests. Many claim that they can fit in the seat with both armrests down, but that doesn’t mean they actually fit in the seat.

I said I flew with someone most times.  There were times I flew alone and on those occasions, I was concerned about making a fellow traveler, unfortunate enough to sit next to me, uncomfortable.  I remember seeing the face of the weary person as I waddled down the aisle, it was the look that was saying, please, please walk past me.  I was not only embarrassed, but I understood their dismay; so if it was possible, I would sacrifice my comfort and sit in the front row if a seat was open. You see, in the front seats the tray is not attached to the seat-back in front, because there is no seat-back in front. So it comes from the middle armrest  and because of that placement, it is not possible to lift the armrest. I could still sit in the seat, but trust me I didn’t fit, however, I would rather be uncomfortable myself, then force someone else to tolerate being seated next to me. It wasn’t fun for me either way, but my bulk left few options.

Back at the time of the “TO FAT TO FLY EVENT” It was reported that Mr. Smith had purchased two seats, but was able to board an earlier flight. On the earlier flight two seats were not available, so he would have to sit next to someone else. Mr. Smith, it had been reported, stated at the time that “he knows he is fat, but he is not too fat to fly.”

I haven’t seen Kevin Smith lately, but in every picture and video I have seen he definitely appears more than just a bit overweight. I know back when I was three hundred and forty pounds, I never thought I was that fat. In my case and in many of those whom I work with, we never see just how overweight we actually are — or in my case was.

There are those who have metabolic and/or underlying medical conditions that cause obesity

The following  statements are not intended for those individuals.

There is a much displayed, self-absorbed logic that implies if one is overweight or obese, that is just the way it is and everyone else will just have to deal with it. I am sorry, I do not agree with that logic.

I do agree that one has the right to weigh however much one wants. I was in the morbidly obese category myself and while I did not say, “Hey I want to weigh 340 pounds,” it was still my choice. Through slothfulness and poor food consumption; it was my choice to allow myself to almost reach the 350 pound mark. So, with that said, if a person is one of the many who chooses an obese lifestyle, then one also must accept the responsibility for the limits obesity imposes.

I, on a fateful day, made a decision to accept responsibility for the self-made mound of flesh and fat I had morphed into and changed my physical condition. I don’t know how much Mr. Smith’s tips the scale these days.  I am aware that he has lost some weight, but claims he will never be thin.  If he would like to ensure that he will never again be fat, will be forever fit and enjoy a better quality of life for himself and his family,  I will make this offer:

I will give up my practice and dedicate one year of my life to help Kevin Smith shed his excess weight and improve his fitness.

Once we agree upon an  acceptable fee then, for that year, he will be my only client. I will relocate to an area of his choosing and assist him in embracing a fit lifestyle.

I doubt he will take me up on my offer, but I make one guarantee, once I get him in shape he will love his new fit lifestyle.

His negativity and hate based entertainment show is perhaps the prime example of how a bottom feeder plays into other people’s fears and lot in life to boost one’s own interest.

Even if I believed that a vegetarian diet was in fact healthy; Steve does not present an outward appearance of physical vitality such as high carb, vegan advocate Harley “DurianRider” Johnstone.
