It Time For A Healthcare Paradigm Shift!

President Barack Obama's signature on the heal...

In the past, there has been much talk and debate about national health care and those debates will be rekindled with the news reports that Obamacare is going to go before the Supreme Court.  However, I am not going to discuss politics or the pros and cons of universal health care.  For now, that is in the control of the courts and the politicians.

What I would like to discuss is one of the major risk factors to our health, one major risk that we, ourselves, can actually control – obesity.

I heard on the news that obesity (I believe they stated specifically childhood obesity) was a complex problem, one that does not have simple solutions.

Okay, let’s examine this ludicrous statement. Generally speaking, unless a person has an underlying medical or hormonal condition, there is no reason for one to be overweight or obese.  I am sorry to burst many people’s excuse-seeking bubbles but that is a fact.

We control our bodies.

We control what goes in.

We control the amount of exercise we put out.

The problem is not complex: it is too much sugar, too much high fructose corn syrup, too much processed fast foods, not enough lean proteins, not enough fresh raw vegetables and not enough getting from behind the computer and moving.

The solution itself is also simple: cut the sugar, cut out the high fructose corn syrup, get rid of the highly processed refined garbage Americans are shoveling down their gullets and replace them with lean proteins, raw fresh vegetables, healthy fats, low glycemic fruits and get up and get moving.

Today we have more obese people in the United States than those who are simply overweight.

This is a real problem

This problem will lead to real diseases.

The morbidly obese are going to stress the U.S. health care system to a degree that not all the private or public health insurance money will be able to handle.

A local school district was given a grant from the State Education Department to fight childhood obesity. I don’t know why they needed $5,000. I will tell them how to do it for half that. Has anyone ever seen school menus today? While healthy options are available, there is still plenty of sugar laden and processed junk on the menu. Side note: if your school still has soda machines, get ’em out.

Physical education must be a five-day-a-week class and a regimented exercise program is a necessity. We need to teach children fitness as a lifestyle from their earliest and most formative years. I will even come in and design it.

My good friend, the Yonk, at his highly influential blog The Lu Lac Political Letter, mentioned how a company had an incentive program for its employees. The employees were paid for taking steps to be responsible for their own wellness. Sounds like a good plan, but what passes for dietary guidelines and exercise plans really do very little for the morbidly obese. Again, I can design the program and then I will make sure people stick to it. If you want to pay people to take care of themselves okay, but give them the guidance and the accountability to stick to it.

I remember in the mid 1980’s when HMOs and PPOs first started, one of the great parts about my plan was that my gym membership was paid in full by the health insurance company. I used that membership. However, I knew many who joined, but then were out of the gym within a month. The result was that the good intentions of helping their insured get fit, ended up just costing the insurance company more money than it saved and they changed the benefit to a discount and then eventually did away with it.

In the United States, we are focused on our healthcare crisis. We are trying to figure out how to pay for care. The reality is that we must stop focusing solely on the “care” part of health care and start putting an emphasis on “health.”

Unless we act today, for some, tomorrow may be very bleak.

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month! Who Knew?

I was doing my usual perusing of internet articles and news stories on obesity, when I came across an article that stated, September, this month is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.  With summer winding down, school starting and the Labor Day holiday, this very important information seemed to get lost in the mix and it should not have.  Among the many issues we set aside a special month for, defeating childhood obesity is perhaps one of the most important.

Barack Obama President of the United States of...

I reviewed the relevant news information and learned that President Obama did in fact kick off the month with a proclamation.  I read over the reports on the proclamation and found this particular line interesting.  From TheHill.com, “By taking action to address the issue of childhood obesity,” the president said, “we can help America’s next generation reach their full potential.”

I find this political hypocrisy on a grand scale.  Yes, I am aware that the President of the United States has many pressing issues that he has mishandled since his election.  However, this one is a no-brainer and yet, his inaction on childhood obesity is epic.

Time and time again the President has only given lip service to The First Lady’s signature initiative.

Two prime examples of the President’s insincerity come immediately to my mind.

One brings us all the way back to the President’s first year in office, it took him just about one year to fill positions on the President’s Council on Fitness, Sport and Nutrition.  I understand that ceremonial positions have no genuine power, however, the lack of concern in filling these positions demonstrates a lack of importance, and in turn lack of regard the President has for the health and fitness of this nation.  This President places so much importance on reforming health care and providing care, he totally dismisses the importance of maintaining health.  Childhood and adult obesity are becoming more and more prevalent in the last several years, yet, instead of focusing on one of the most dominant preventable causes of many diseases, the President chose to place this council on the farthest back burner he could locate.

Second, and just as disturbing, if not more, is President Obama’s complete lack of leading by example when it comes to proper eating and exercise.  I did a Google search for President Obama and exercise, the bulk of the results hadn’t revealed any recent coverage except for mentioning that the President was sometimes playing basketball.  The majority of the stories date back to 2008.  For all of his predecessor’s many failings, President George W. Bush made his personal health and fitness a high priority.  His scheduled exercise times were often used to show how disconnected the former President was, instead of lauding him for his dedication to maintaining his wellness in even the most stressful times.  Additionally, there is the crap for food that President Obama is consistently shoveling into his body.  Often times his dietary choices are foods that are better to have never been conceived, let alone prepared, much less consumed, yet he is photographed gleefully gorging himself.

Again, I understand that the President of the United States of America has many very real and very pressing issues and situations that require his attention, however, is it really too much to ask that a leader lead through example?  The President has access to fitness equipment and a culinary staff that will prepare him low carbohydrate and extremely healthy meals.  Is it really all that difficult to make 60-90 minutes a day to exercise (especially when his office is downstairs from his residence) and to provide his body with healthy fuel?

It is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, instead of simply being aware, let’s do something our political class seems extremely unable or incapable of doing —- let’s take some action!
