Below is an excerpt from my book: Fat Then Fit Now; A life beyond weight loss. It outlines the different types of support or lack thereof you may expect in your weight loss journey.
I have broken down the type of people you will encounter into four categories.
or you can search for it on Amazon.com.
Support
There are many types of support out there. Some are good, some are not. Let’s break them down.
First is the one who encourages you, but doesn’t go overboard. This person is ideal. They don’t change their life while you are working toward your goal. When you tell them you have lost weight, they will give you a thumbs up and leave it at that.
Second is the over the top encourager. This person will be happy for you, but then go on and on about how good you have done. So much so, that it can make you uncomfortable. A simple good job is enough.
Third is the wing-person. This individual has the greatest intentions. Unfortunately, those intentions can end up making you, the person losing weight, feel guilty. The wing-person will not go to certain restaurants because you can’t eat there. They will avoid certain foods because you don’t eat them. In essence, they think they are helping you, but you actually start to feel bad that you are having an impact on their life, so you give in. You will go to a pizza restaurant and end up having pizza just so not to make the other person not go and eat.
Finally there is the saboteur. This individual has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Usually it is a man when a woman is trying to get fit. This person will bring home the bad stuff and enjoy eating it in front of you. This person will stock the cabinets full of the garbage you should not be eating and secretly get rid of your good food. The reason for this type of behavior? It is plain and simple insecurity.
You see women, men think you think, like men. They believe that you are going to have a hot body and you will immediately hop in the sack with any guy who now pays attention to you. So, their goal is to keep you unfit and unhealthy in the hopes that you will feel so bad about yourself that you will be grateful to have their insecure ass.
In fact many of your support group may be a combination of all of the above. Most are well meaning and think they are helping you.
How do you deal with those whose help may actually hinder your efforts? You don’t.
You don’t rely on anyone other than yourself.

It is our job to educate people on making better choices about what they eat, drink or do. We’re glad that our spouses are supportive of the healthy lifestyle changes we’ve made and continue to make. Another thing, we don’t go around telling people we’ve lost this or that many pounds. We are simply happy with our energy and vitality–it really makes a difference. We don’t need someone else telling us we look good–that’s only skin deep.
